A research team from the Centre for Watershed Management Technology Research and Development studied light intensity in the riparian zones of the Modang and Cemoro rivers, within the teak production forest of KHDTK Cemoro Modang. The study is significant because light is a primary factor for photosynthesis, determining the survival, growth and adaptation of vegetation. The results show that light intensity differs between the two rivers owing to variations in canopy cover.
Canopy cover in the area falls into three categories: teak forest of various ages as a production crop, johar (Schleichera oleosa) from previous rehabilitation planting, and areas previously logged. These differences in cover are what make light intensity in the riparian zone uneven. According to the study, the selection of shade-tolerant and shade-intolerant trees needs to be taken into account in rehabilitation, alongside silvicultural and socio-economic considerations for local communities.
For communities living around the forest, the findings offer a simple guide: the tree species planted along riverbanks should be matched to the amount of light reaching them. Rehabilitation of riparian zones in the teak forest, which has so far been dominated by teak with low species diversity, needs to be improved so that the protective function of riverbanks is enhanced.
