A research team from the University of Jambi recorded 45 tree species from 22 families in the Sungai Buluh Peat Protection Forest area, Mendahara Ulu District, Tanjung Jabung Timur Regency, Jambi Province. The study, published in Jurnal Wasian, compared two villages within the area: Sinar Wajo Village Forest and Sungai Beras Village Forest. The results show that Sinar Wajo has higher tree species diversity, with 45 species from 22 families, while Sungai Beras has 36 species from 21 families.
Although the number of species differs, tree density at both locations is almost the same: 437 trees per hectare in Sinar Wajo and 443 trees per hectare in Sungai Beras. The difference in species is thought to be due to different environmental conditions and levels of human disturbance. The most prominent species in both villages is Tetramerista glabra, with an importance value of 39.74 per cent in Sinar Wajo and 34.25 per cent in Sungai Beras. In Sinar Wajo, the Anacardiaceae family dominates, whereas in Sungai Beras the Fabaceae family is more commonly found.
According to this study, the Sungai Buluh peat forest is still relatively intact. Natural regeneration is proceeding well, as indicated by the number of species at the sapling level being not much different from that at the tree level. Baseline data such as these are important as a reference for ecological monitoring and peat forest management, especially because peat forests play a role in maintaining water regulation and storing carbon. The study also notes that tree diversity can decline if peat forests experience disturbances such as drainage, logging and land conversion.
