A research team from the Master's Programme in Environmental Science at the Postgraduate School of Diponegoro University has measured the economic value of water in Grojogan Sewu Nature Tourism Park (TWA), which has long been used by local residents for cooking and farming. The study, published in Jurnal Wasian in 2022, found that the economic value of domestic water use reaches IDR 238,565,600,000 per month and agricultural irrigation IDR 7,548,750 per year. According to the research, this value is high, although the community is unaware of it.
This low awareness is reflected in residents' willingness to pay for water use, which remains low at only IDR 7,687 per month for domestic water and IDR 6,818 per month for agricultural irrigation. Yet water from this conservation area is a daily source of life for communities around Grojogan Sewu.
The researchers argue that information about the economic value of water needs to be communicated to the public. The hope is that residents will increasingly appreciate and help preserve the TWA Grojogan Sewu area, because the water they use every day has an economic value far greater than they imagine.
