A research team from the Manado Environment and Forestry Research and Development Centre has recorded 49 wildlife species in Aqua Lestari Forest Park (THAL), North Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi. The fauna comprises 36 bird species, eight butterflies, three reptiles and three mammals. The study set out to assess the area's faunal diversity as a potential draw for ecotourism.
Of the 49 species, nine are endemic to Sulawesi and 11 are protected under Indonesian law. The presence of endemic wildlife is a significant asset for ecotourism development in THAL, which lies in the Kaki Dian area of Mount Klabat. The research stresses that site management must keep habitats in a natural condition.
For communities living around the forest, this wildlife diversity offers opportunities for nature-based tourism enterprises, such as guiding and birdwatching. The study nevertheless emphasises that developing THAL must prioritise habitat conservation rather than simply attracting visitors.
