A research team from the Centre for Forest Biotechnology and Tree Improvement Research and Development, together with Universitas Ahmad Dahlan, recorded 27 herb species in the Mount Merapi research forest area of KHDTK Kaliurang, Yogyakarta. Of these, 21 species are known to have potential as medicinal ingredients. The findings were published in Jurnal Wasian in 2019.
The most dominant species was Centhoteca lappacea (L) Desv, with an average importance value of 79.26 per cent. The species with the lowest value was Fimbristylis dichotoma (L.) Vahl, at 2.66 per cent. The herb diversity in this area is relatively low, with a diversity index of 0.58 to 0.78. Nevertheless, these herbaceous plants have long been used as traditional medicines in various countries. Other studies have also demonstrated their potential to treat wounds, urinary tract disorders, fever and diarrhoea, as well as to act as antioxidants and remedies for diabetes and cancer.
According to the study, these findings complement the data on plant species in the Mount Merapi area. The information is also expected to raise public awareness of the importance of using and conserving herbaceous plants in the area, particularly in KHDTK Kaliurang.
