A research team from the Manado Environmental and Forestry Research and Development Centre has identified three bird species of the Rallidae family within the institute's grounds. They are the isabelline bush-hen (Amaurornis isabellina), the buff-banded rail (Gallirallus philippensis) and the barred rail (Gallirallus torquatus). The study, conducted in June 2015, recorded the conservation status of all three birds.
Of the three, the isabelline bush-hen is the most remarkable, as it lives only on the island of Sulawesi. The buff-banded rail and the barred rail, by contrast, have wide distributions. According to the study, none of the three species is protected in Indonesia, and all fall into the Least Concern category on the IUCN Red List. The research team also noted that the isabelline bush-hen shows good prospects for captive breeding or domestication.
The findings add to knowledge of bird diversity at the Manado forestry research site. For communities living near the forest, this Sulawesi-endemic bird represents a natural asset that deserves to be known and safeguarded, particularly because its range is confined to a single island.
