Three Fungi Causing Red Leaf Spot on Red Jabon Seedlings in Manado

Research at the Kima Atas permanent nursery in Manado identified three fungi causing red leaf spot on red jabon seedlings. The infection disrupts seedling growth.

A research team from the Manado Forestry Research Institute identified the cause of red leaf spot disease on red jabon seedlings (Anthocephalus macrophyllus (Roxb.) Havil). The study, published in Jurnal Wasian in 2015, was conducted at the Kima Atas permanent nursery in Manado. The results showed that the disease is caused by three fungi: Cercospora sp., Colletotrichum sp., and Pestalotia sp.

Red leaf spot, or anthracnose, is the most common disease affecting red jabon seedlings, both in nurseries and in the field. Infection by these fungi disrupts the plant's photosynthesis, thereby inhibiting seedling growth. According to the study, the abundance of red jabon seedlings to meet market demand can also create an imbalanced ecosystem. The availability of seedlings provides a food source for pests, triggering outbreaks of pests and pathogens.

To control the disease, the research team noted several measures that have been taken: regulating watering intensity, isolating infected seedlings, and using chemical fungicides. These findings are important for nursery managers and forest farmers cultivating red jabon, as identifying the cause of the disease is the first step before control measures are implemented.
