A research team from the Manado Forestry and Environmental Research and Development Centre has recorded the distribution of birds in Aketajawe Lolobata National Park, North Maluku. The area, a former commercial logging concession, is an important habitat for birds-of-paradise, lorikeets and other animals endemic to North Maluku. The study, published in the Journal Wasian in 2016, aimed to validate data on bird species diversity in the area.
The survey results show that the number of bird species differs in each zone. The wilderness and traditional zones have the highest number and diversity of species, at 45. The buffer zone has 39 species with the most varied species composition, while the core zone has only 19 species. Among the species recorded are the Halmahera bird-of-paradise (Semioptera wallacei), one of 15 species endemic to North Maluku, and the invisible rail (Habroptila wallacii), which is endemic to Halmahera. The research team noted that the birds' natural habitat in this area is generally in open areas along former logging roads and forest edges, and that only a few species were found in the primary forest of the core zone.
These findings are important for the management of the national park. The highly variable distribution of birds between zones shows that conservation efforts cannot rely on the core zone alone. Open areas and forest edges in the wilderness, traditional and buffer zones are also habitats that need to be protected, especially since this area has previously suffered damage from commercial logging.
