Kalapi, an Endangered Endemic Tree of Sulawesi, Can Be Propagated via Root Cuttings

Researchers from Halu Oleo University found that root cuttings of kalapi (Kalappia celebica) grew successfully with the aid of Rootone-F. A concentration of 500 ppm gave the best results.

Kalapi (Kalappia celebica Kosterm.), an endemic tree of Sulawesi that is classified as endangered, can be propagated through root cuttings. A research team from the Department of Forestry, Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Science, Halu Oleo University, Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, has shown that the application of Rootone-F improves the success of root cutting growth in kalapi. This study was conducted because the propagation of kalapi is constrained by limited seed availability.

The research, carried out from March to June 2019 in the plastic greenhouse of the Indonesian Mycorrhiza Association (AMI) Southeast Sulawesi Branch, Kendari, tested six concentration levels of Rootone-F, ranging from 0 to 500 ppm. The results showed that a concentration of 500 ppm gave the best results in terms of the percentage of live cuttings, percentage of shoots, percentage of roots, number of shoots, and dry weight of shoots. Thus, kalapi can be propagated vegetatively using root cuttings.

This finding is important because kalapi is an endemic tree species of Sulawesi whose population is threatened. Propagation through root cuttings can serve as an alternative when seeds are difficult to obtain, thereby increasing opportunities for the conservation and cultivation of kalapi in the future.
