A research team from the Faculty of Forestry at Bogor Agricultural University has recorded a population of 227 Javan langurs (Trachypithecus auratus) in the Leuweung Sancang Nature Reserve, Garut Regency, West Java. The study, conducted by Abdul Haris Mustari and Achmad Fajar Pasaribu, identified 19 langur groups along the coastal forest of the area, with group sizes ranging from 7 to 17 individuals.
Population density was recorded at 0.15 individuals per hectare. The age structure of the population is dominated by adults: 43 per cent adults, 27 per cent juveniles and 30 per cent infants. The male-to-female sex ratio is 1:3. A total of 110 plant species were recorded in the habitat, with ketapang (Terminalia catappa) being the most dominant species. Javan langurs feed on at least 17 plant species, consuming leaves, buds, shoots, flowers and fruit.
For communities living around the forest, these data show that the survival of the Javan langur in Leuweung Sancang depends on the food plants and coastal forest in which it lives. The study recorded a population dominated by adult langurs, so monitoring of the groups and their habitat remains important to safeguard this protected species.
