A research team from the Manokwari Forestry and Environmental Research and Development Centre has developed a model to estimate the volume of commercial timber species in the concession area of PT Wapoga Mutiara Timber, Sarmi Regency, Papua. The study, published in the Journal Wasian in 2016, arose from the need of forest managers for accurate and reliable measurement tools when planning forest utilisation.
The results showed that tree diameter and stem length are not closely correlated. The correlation coefficient between the two was only 6.7 per cent, meaning that stem length alone cannot be used to estimate timber content. Of the equations tested, the best model for estimating tree stem volume was Log V = -3.34 + 2.16 log d, where d is tree diameter. This model passed validation tests in the concession area.
For forest managers and communities living around the forest, more accurate timber volume estimates help calculate stand potential before felling is carried out. Data-based planning of this kind is important so that timber utilisation does not exceed the forest's capacity to recover.
