A research team from the Banjarbaru Forestry and Environment Research and Development Centre has developed and tested a model for estimating the timber volume of balangeran (Shorea balangeran) growing in Central Kalimantan. The study is significant because accurate tree volume estimation is essential for calculating forest stand potential precisely. The model was developed using data from 52 trees for model construction, 23 trees for model validation and 10 trees for external validation.
The results show that a model using only tree diameter as a variable did not meet the criteria for the best model. These criteria comprise an aggregate deviation (AD) of less than 1% and a relative deviation (RD) of less than 8%. However, when tree height was added as a variable, the model's coefficient of determination increased by 6.54% and the model met the AD and RD criteria. The best balangeran model has a coefficient of determination of 89.77%.
Nevertheless, the study notes that the best model cannot be applied to other locations with different stand characteristics. The findings provide guidance for forest managers in estimating the timber volume of balangeran, an economically valuable species of meranti, so that forest utilisation planning can be more accurate. However, users should exercise caution when applying this model outside the study location.
