A research team from the Agroforestry Technology Research and Development Centre has mapped conflict in Gunung Ciremai National Park (TNGC), particularly in Cisantana Village, Cigugur District, Kuningan Regency, West Java. The study, conducted in February 2017, found that the main conflict in the area is the change in forest status, which affects the economic activities of the surrounding community. The conflict involves eight dominant actors.
According to the research published in the Wasian Journal, the parties involved in the conflict have different disputing styles. These differences were then facilitated and mediated so that they could apply for permits to manage Patulungan as a parking management area and Ipukan as a tourist guide service. The research team noted that the role of outsiders with no connection to the conflict is necessary to achieve conflict resolution.
These findings are important for forest communities and local government as they show that conflict in conservation areas is not only about land status but also about community economic access. Mediation approaches and the facilitation of small business permits within the national park can serve as a middle way between forest conservation interests and the livelihood needs of the community.
