Leaf Spot Disease in Cempaka Seedlings Caused by Colletotrichum sp. Fungus

A research team from the Manado Forestry Research Institute has identified the fungus Colletotrichum sp. as the cause of leaf spot disease in cempaka seedlings. Control measures range from isolating infected seedlings to using appropriate fungicides.

A research team from the Manado Forestry Research Institute has identified the fungus Colletotrichum sp. as the cause of leaf spot disease in cempaka seedlings (Magnolia elegans). Published in the Journal Wasian in 2015, the study emphasises the importance of identifying the cause of the disease so that control techniques are properly targeted.

According to the research, the initial symptoms of the disease appear as lines or spots on the leaf surface with distinct margins. The spots are generally brown and surrounded by a darker edge. Disease control can be achieved by isolating infected seedlings, reducing canopy density, and using appropriate fungicides.

For forest communities and nursery managers, these findings provide a simple reference for preventing the spread of the disease among cempaka seedlings. Cempaka itself is a tree species widely used for its timber, so healthy seedlings are key to successful planting.
