A research team from the Department of Forest Management, Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Gadjah Mada, has studied the socio-demographic conditions of eucalyptus leaf harvesters at RPH Nglipar, KPH Yogyakarta. Published in Jurnal Wasian in 2020, the study found that the average worker is 58 years old and male. Educational attainment is dominated by primary-school (SD) graduates, at 64 per cent.
According to the study, the average household has four dependants, and farming is the main livelihood. The average landholding of eucalyptus leaf harvesters is only 0.17 ha. In terms of work performance, the team recorded that a worker of normal capacity at KPH Yogyakarta can harvest 72.23 kg per hour.
Eucalyptus leaf harvesting is a forestry activity that yields non-timber forest products. The study notes that harvesting productivity is strongly influenced by human-resource capacity and biophysical factors. A socio-demographic profile of workers — relatively advanced age, low education and small landholdings — is important for designing training and improving harvesting performance in the area.
