Papaya Leaf and Chilli Mixture Effectively Suppresses Pests in White Oyster Mushroom Cultivation

Researchers at the Manado Forestry and Environmental Research and Development Centre have found that a mixture of papaya leaf and chilli extracts is the most effective way to suppress pest attacks in white oyster mushroom cultivation.

A research team from the Manado Forestry and Environmental Research and Development Centre tested three bioinsecticide formulations to protect white oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) from pest attack. The results showed that a mixture of papaya leaf and chilli extracts was the most effective. The findings were published in the Journal Wasian in 2018.

The formulation consisted of papaya leaf extract, chilli and water in a ratio of 1:1:2. According to the study, this mixture reduced the number of damaged mushroom fruiting bodies by up to 84 per cent. Yields were twice as high and mushroom diameter was 1.3 times larger than in the control treatment. The two other formulations tested contained only papaya leaves or only chilli.

For oyster mushroom growers, pest attacks are a constraint that reduces harvest yields. This formulation based on papaya leaves and chilli offers a control method that uses natural materials found around the home, making it a cheaper option that is easy to prepare oneself.
