A research team from the Manado Forestry and Environmental Research and Development Centre examined how residents of Pinogu Sub-district, Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo, perceive and utilise the forest. Pinogu is an enclave or settlement area located within Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park. The study was conducted in 2017 in five villages—Bangiyo, Pinogu Induk, Pinogu Permai, Tilongibila, and Dataran Hijau—by interviewing 150 respondents. The results show that residents' perception of the forest is fairly positive, with a score of 79.69 on a scale from 40 to 100.
According to the study, residents' perceptions are influenced by their position within the village community. Residents also utilise various forest products: hardwoods, rattan, medicinal plants, wildlife, forest fruits, forest mushrooms, and honey. These materials are obtained from the forest around Pinogu and from within the Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park area.
This finding is important because it shows that for enclave residents, the forest is not merely a landscape but a source of daily needs. For national park managers and local government, the residents' fairly positive outlook can serve as a foundation for involving them in protecting the area, especially since the utilisation of forest products continues within the national park.
