A research team from the Centre for Research and Development of Watershed Management Technology and the Centre for Research and Development of Environmental and Forestry Research in Manokwari assessed the level of vulnerability of the community in Wasior, Teluk Wondama Regency, West Papua, to flash floods. The study, published in the Journal Wasian in 2020, was conducted after a major flash flood struck the area in 2010, causing loss of life and material damage.
The results showed that the community's socio-economic vulnerability to flash floods was in the moderate category, with a total score of 2.084. Meanwhile, institutional vulnerability was classified as low, with a total score of 2.251. The assessment covered socio-economic indicators for residents and institutions around the watershed, ranging from the most vulnerable to the least vulnerable.
According to the study, these findings can serve as a basis for consideration in implementing flash flood mitigation in Wasior. By understanding the level of vulnerability, prevention efforts are expected to be more precisely targeted, thereby reducing the risk of loss of life and material damage should a flash flood occur again.
