Sengon (Falcataria moluccana) seeds stored for two years experience a decline in germination capacity. A research team from the Department of Silviculture, Faculty of Forestry, Bogor Agricultural University, together with the Forest Seed Technology Research and Development Centre, tested two soaking methods to restore the quality of these seeds. The result: soaking in ultra-fine bubble (UFB) water is more effective than a polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) solution.
In the study published in Jurnal Wasian, sengon seeds were grouped by three levels of germination capacity: 62% (initial seeds), 83%, and 57%. For seeds with 57% germination, soaking in UFB water injected with 99% oxygen increased germination capacity, germination speed, and vigour index. For seeds with 62% germination, UFB water injected with ambient air gave the best results for germination capacity, time to reach 50% germination (T50), and vigour index. Meanwhile, for seeds with 83% germination, the soaking treatments showed no significant difference.
These findings are important for sengon farmers and nurseries. Sengon is a fast-growing species widely planted by communities, so seeds that have been stored for a long time and have reduced germination can still be utilised. According to this study, improving seed viability and vigour is more effective with UFB than with PEG 6000, especially for seeds whose germination capacity is already very low.
