Nyamplung seeds (Calophyllum inophyllum L.) are known to lose viability rapidly when stored for long periods. A research team from the Forest Tree Seed Technology Research and Development Centre therefore investigated appropriate seed treatment techniques to maintain viability during storage. The results were published in Jurnal Wasian in 2020 by Naning Yuniarti.
Of the five treatments tested, moistening the seeds with damp newspaper for 2 hours gave the best results. This treatment increased the germination capacity of nyamplung seeds by 42 per cent and the germination rate by 0.56 per cent per etmal. The other treatments tested included soaking in distilled water for 24 hours, soaking in a 15 per cent PEG-6000 solution for 24 hours, and moistening with scouring ash for 2 hours. The study also noted that the longer the seeds were stored, the more their germination capacity and germination rate declined.
These findings are important for communities and forest farmers wishing to cultivate nyamplung. The plant offers dual benefits, both economic and ecological. With a simple treatment using damp newspaper, nyamplung seeds can be better prepared before planting, thereby increasing their chances of growth.
