Nyamplung Seedlings Over 31 cm Tall More Likely to Survive in the Field

Research in Parungpanjang, Bogor, shows that the height and diameter of nyamplung seedlings in the nursery determine their growth two years after planting in the field.

A research team from the Forest Tree Seed Technology Research and Development Centre has found that the size of nyamplung (Calophyllum inophyllum) seedlings while still in the nursery affects their survival and growth after planting in the field. The study, published in Jurnal Wasian in 2019, observed nyamplung seedlings from Carita, Pangandaran, and Purworejo planted in Parungpanjang, Bogor Regency, West Java, over two years.

The results show that seedlings taller than 31 cm with a stem diameter greater than 5.1 mm have a better chance of growing well in the field. Smaller seedlings tend to be less successful. The researchers also noted that the height-to-diameter ratio and seedling quality index should be considered when selecting seedlings. The classification of seedling form significantly affected survival, height increment, and diameter increment after planting.

These findings are important for forest farmers and extension workers who commonly plant nyamplung, a tree known for its tolerance to coastal land and often used for reforestation and biofuel. Selecting seedlings that are sufficiently tall and have sturdy stems from the nursery can improve planting success in the field.
