Cempaka Wasian Grows Best Under 50 Percent Shade

Research at the Manado Forestry and Environment Research and Development Centre shows that cempaka wasian seedlings grow optimally under 50 percent shade. This finding is important for providing quality seedlings for community forests in North Sulawesi.

Cempaka wasian (Magnolia tsiampaca) seedlings grow best in the nursery when they receive about 50 percent shade. This finding was reported by a research team from the Manado Forestry and Environment Research and Development Centre, Arif Irawan and Hanif Nurul Hidayah, in the 2017 Wasian Journal. This research is important because cempaka wasian is a high-value timber species whose development in North Sulawesi, especially through community forests, requires a supply of quality seedlings.

The team compared three shade levels: 25 percent with a light intensity of about 37,350 lux, 50 percent at about 19,100 lux, and 75 percent at about 8,018 lux. The results showed that 50 percent shade gave the best effect on seedling growth and quality in the nursery. This means that seedlings do not need too much light, but they should not be too dark either.

For forest farmers and communities living around forests, this finding can serve as a simple guide when preparing a cempaka wasian nursery: adjust the shade so that the incoming sunlight is not excessive. In this way, the seedlings produced are better and the chances of successful planting in community forests increase.
