Three meranti species producing tengkawang from West Kalimantan can be distinguished from one another by the shape of their stipules. They are Shorea stenoptera, Shorea macrophylla, and Shorea gysbertsiana. This identification was carried out by a research team from the Yogyakarta Forest Biotechnology and Tree Improvement Research Centre, Eritrina Windyarini and Tri Maria Hasnah, as part of efforts to improve tengkawang-producing species. The results were published in the Journal Wasian in 2015.
In addition to identifying the species, the team studied the growth of 10-month-old seedlings from two populations originating from West Kalimantan. The results showed that seedling height and sturdiness differed significantly between groups. Seedling height ranged from 67.19 to 88.79 cm, diameter from 9.65 to 10.33 mm, and sturdiness values from 7 to 9.21. The best-growing seedlings were Shorea stenoptera and Shorea macrophylla from Gunung Bunga, West Kalimantan.
This finding is important because tengkawang has largely been harvested from natural forests, whose productivity has declined year by year. By identifying species and assessing seedling growth, tengkawang planting in plantation forests can be directed towards the most promising species. This research is an initial step; the source does not mention the results of further field trials.
