Transplanting Nyamplung Seedlings: Intact Leaves and Seeds Give Best Growth

Research in Manado shows that nyamplung seedlings transplanted with intact leaves and seeds grow tallest, while their survival rate remains 100 per cent.

A research team from the Manado Forestry and Environmental Research and Development Centre investigated methods for transplanting nyamplung (Calophyllum inophyllum) seedlings from the nursery. This research is important because coastal rehabilitation in North Sulawesi requires large numbers of nyamplung seedlings, while nursery production is not yet optimal. The results show that transplanting treatment affected only height growth, whereas seedling survival remained at 100 per cent.

In a study published in Jurnal Wasian in 2017, the team compared several treatments applied when seedlings were transplanted: leaf pruning, seed cutting and root cutting. Seedlings transplanted with intact leaves and intact seeds produced the best height growth, at 4.60 cm and 4.63 cm respectively. Root treatments had no significant effect. According to the study, the 100 per cent survival rate shows that nyamplung is sufficiently robust to withstand transplanting treatments.

These findings are useful for coastal communities and local governments wishing to develop nyamplung. Besides coastal rehabilitation, the plant also has potential to support national biofuel needs. With appropriate transplanting techniques, nyamplung seedlings can grow better without reducing the number that survive.
