A research team from the Manado Forestry Research Institute has recorded that the success of mangrove forest rehabilitation depends heavily on the role of institutions and the participation of residents. Research in the coastal area of Tiwoho Village, North Sulawesi Province, found that a number of parties played a major role in pioneering mangrove conservation in the village, namely community leaders, the village government, non-governmental organisations, religious institutions, formal educational institutions and foreign researchers.
Tiwoho residents help protect the mangroves by not cutting mangrove wood for any reason, planting seedlings at every opportunity, and guarding the forest against interference from others. According to this research, failure in mangrove rehabilitation rarely occurs when institutional roles are fully carried out. Management approaches such as those in Tiwoho are expected to serve as an example for managers in other areas with similar characteristics.
For Indonesia's coastal communities, these findings confirm that protecting mangroves is not solely the task of the government or particular institutions. Joint work by residents, religious leaders and schools is the key to keeping mangrove forests sustainable so that their benefits can be felt in the long term.
