A research team from the Manado Forestry and Environment Research and Development Centre has investigated methods for propagating keben (Barringtonia asiatica), a coastal plant that helps protect coastal areas. This research is important because around 14,805.14 hectares of coastal ecosystem in North Sulawesi are recorded as degraded, while propagation techniques for keben have not been widely studied.
In a study published in the Journal Wasian in 2016, the team tested root and stem cuttings (stumps) of various sizes. The results showed that a combination of 10 cm root length and 5 cm stem length gave the best results: a 93% survival rate, height of 10.3 cm, diameter of 1.08 cm, sturdiness value of 2.03, and seedling quality index of 1.35. Root and stem length significantly affected seedling height and sturdiness.
Nevertheless, the research team noted that seedling height at 10 weeks did not yet meet the requirements for land rehabilitation under the applicable regulations. These findings remain useful as a basis for developing keben propagation, a plant that helps resist abrasion and wind in coastal areas.
