Inobonto Poigar I Forest in North Sulawesi Is Secondary Forest, Here Are the Dominant Tree Species

Research in the Inobonto Poigar I Production Forest, Bolaang Mongondow Regency, North Sulawesi, recorded 78 tree species with Trema orientalis as the dominant species. Its vegetation structure indicates that the area is secondary forest.

A research team from the Manado Environmental and Forestry Research and Development Centre recorded 78 tree species in the Inobonto Poigar I Production Forest, part of the Poigar Forest Management Unit (KPH) in North Sulawesi. The study, conducted in September 2014, concluded that the area is secondary forest rather than primary forest. The findings were published in the Journal Wasian in 2016.

At the tree and pole levels, the most dominant species is Trema orientalis, while at the sapling level, Piper sp. is more abundant. Species diversity at the sapling level was also recorded as higher than at the tree and pole levels. The average basal area of the forest is 16.77 m2/ha, and the distribution of tree sizes differs from that of primary forest.

For local communities and KPH managers, these findings are important as a basis for ecological restoration efforts. According to the study, understanding vegetation composition and diversity helps in planning the restoration of forest areas that have long been exploited.
