A research team from the Centre for Forest Biotechnology and Tree Improvement tested the vegetative propagation of nyamplung (Calophyllum inophyllum) from the Provenance Seed Stand in Wonogiri, Central Java. Nyamplung is known as a source of oil for biofuel, cosmetics and medicine. Until now, propagation has been carried out generatively, although vegetative propagation techniques are needed to preserve the genetic potential of selected parent trees. This study examined the growth response of 22 selected clones propagated by the grafting method.
The results showed that the survival rate of grafted seedlings at two months of age ranged from 15 to 100 per cent. This figure indicates considerable variation among the selected clones. According to the study, further improvements in the success of grafting techniques for nyamplung clones are still needed in order to provide vegetative material for clone testing and operational planting.
For communities and forest managers, the success of vegetative propagation of nyamplung is important for producing stands with high fruit productivity and oil yield. In this way, superior parent trees can be propagated without losing their genetic traits, thereby supporting the development of nyamplung as a source of energy and industrial raw material.
