A research team from the Forest Biotechnology and Tree Improvement Research and Development Centre in Yogyakarta has tested the progeny of pulai darat (Alstonia angustiloba Miq.) in Wonogiri. The study aimed to determine survival rate, plant height, and stem diameter at 2 years of age, as a step towards supporting the provision of superior seed sources. The results were published in the Journal Wasian in 2014.
At 2 years of age, the pulai darat progeny test in Wonogiri had a survival rate of 82.07%, an average height of 2.43 metres, and an average stem diameter of 2.85 centimetres. The test involved four population origins: Carita (Banten), Pendopo (Muara Enim), Lubuk Linggau (Musi Rawas), and Solok (West Sumatra), as well as 43 mother trees.
For forest communities, pulai darat is known as a fast-growing timber species. Research of this kind is important to ensure that planted seedlings come from selected mother trees, so that forest yields can be more assured. However, this study only observed plants at 2 years of age, so the assessment of genetic quality still requires further observation.
