A research team from the Centre for Forest Biotechnology and Tree Improvement Research has assessed the growth of nyawai (Ficus variegata) in Mangunan, Bantul, Yogyakarta. The progeny trial, established in 2015, involved two seed-origin groups: the Lombok subline with 17 families and the Cilacap-Pangandaran subline with 19 families. The study aimed to examine growth variation and genetic parameters at two years after planting.
Survival rates ranged from 89.01% to 91.42%. Differences between families had a highly significant effect on height and stem diameter in both sublines. Genetic diversity for height and diameter was moderate, with genetic coefficients of variation between 4.41% and 9.04%. Individual heritability values ranged from 0.15 to 0.22 for height and from 0.09 to 0.18 for diameter. Family heritability ranged from 0.49 to 0.60 for height and from 0.29 to 0.66 for diameter.
For communities living near forests, nyawai is known as a versatile tree whose timber is often used. These findings indicate that selecting seed from particular families can influence plant growth in the field. However, this study observed the plants only at two years of age, so assessment of growth traits should continue until the stand is older.
