A research team from the Yogyakarta Centre for Forest Biotechnology and Tree Improvement Research has tested the growth of five provenances of pulai gading (Alstonia scholaris) at six months of age in Sumber Klampok, Bali. The results show that provenances from Bali, Lombok (West Nusa Tenggara) and Timor (East Nusa Tenggara) have the best survival rates, height and stem diameter compared with provenances from Jayapura (Papua) and Solok (West Sumatra). This research is important because pulai gading is a fast-growing native Indonesian species with potential for plantation forests.

The trial used genetic material from 46 mother trees, with four seedlings from each mother tree and six replications. According to the study published in the Journal Wasian in 2015, the difference in seedling origin significantly affects the growth of young plants. The wood of pulai gading is commonly used for boxes, matches, shoe heels, mask and puppet crafts, pencil boards and pulp.

For forest communities and plantation forest managers, these results provide an initial indication that seedlings from Bali, Lombok and NTT are worth considering for planting pulai gading. However, this study only observed plants at six months of age, so the long-term adaptability of the five provenances still needs further testing.
