A research team from the Department of Forest Management, Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Gadjah Mada, evaluated the texting, sharing, and mentoring (TSM) method applied in the Go-Honey community empowerment programme in Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta. The programme uses WhatsApp groups to connect participants, resource persons, and local mentors. Published in Jurnal Wasian, the study compares the knowledge levels of Go-Honey participants with those of another stingless bee beekeeping programme that uses face-to-face (FTF) methods.
The results show that Go-Honey participants had higher knowledge levels about trigona beekeeping (Trigona laeviceps) in cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects compared with the control group. The score differences were statistically significant. The TSM method is considered potentially applicable after the pandemic ends, with the principle of distance learning as long as internet connections are available and local mentors provide assistance.
For communities around forests, this method offers a more flexible way of learning without always having to meet in person. Trigona beekeeping itself is known as an environmentally friendly enterprise and can be a source of additional income. The study involved 20 participants, half of them women members of Go-Honey.
