MAKASSAR, 2–4 October 2026 – Lecturers from the Forestry Study Programme, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar, participated in a field data collection survey organised by World Agroforestry (ICRAF) Indonesia in Barru Regency, South Sulawesi. The activity was themed ‘Field Data Collection for a Case Study on Land Cover Mapping in the Lampoko Watershed, Barru Regency’.
The Forestry Study Programme team involved comprised Ir. Jauhar Mukti, S.Hut., M.Hut., IPM., Rahmat Ariandi, S.Hut., M.Hut., and Ahmad Sabri, S.Hut., M.Hut., Ahmad, Sabri, S.Hut., M.Hut., Nur Abdi Aminullah, S.Hut., M.Hut, as well as students from the Forestry Study Programme. The participation of these lecturers and the team represents a form of academic collaboration in support of collecting field reference data (ground check) as a basis for machine learning to improve the accuracy of land cover and land use mapping.
This survey activity is part of the Evolving Participatory Information System for Nature-based Climate Solutions (Epistem) initiative, which aims to develop landscape monitoring technology and to enhance access to and availability of high-quality data in Indonesia. The activity process includes field surveys, reference data collection, land cover and land use mapping, and participatory accuracy testing of thematic maps.
Through its involvement in this activity, the Forestry Study Programme at Unismuh Makassar strengthens its collaborative network with ICRAF Indonesia while opening up opportunities for learning and capacity development in land mapping, landscape management, and nature-based solutions. This collaboration is expected to support the development of the university’s tridharma, strengthen the contribution of academics to natural resource management, and promote the use of spatial data to support sustainable landscape management.
